Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, installs, and performs testing activities on various computer equipment, peripherals, data communication, and computer network systems.
Assembles, installs, configures and tests computer equipment or units of local area networks and wide area networks requiring use of standard interface protocols.
Consults and assists manufacturer's representatives in the installation of new computer equipment; exercise total responsibility for routine installation or modification projects; assists other technicians or the director in repairing, installing and testing complex pieces of equipment or local area networks. Submits equipment repair warranties.
Completes work orders such as installing equipment, connecting and moving devices or creating components of autonomous networks, installing disk drives, network software and hardware, correcting definitions on data switches, protocol converters, etc.
Uses electronic test equipment, such as optical power meters and multimeters, to troubleshoot equipment malfunctions. Uses computer-aided diagnostics and digital logic devices as needed to locate malfunctions. Calibrates test equipment for proper operation.
Configures and sets up servers to work with various programs; install software including, but not limited to Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Windows Server, and Linux. Ensures server backups and networked user backups are performed on a regular basis.
Works with users to monitor, schedule, and respond to Computer Service Requests (CSR's), prioritize CSR's and assign requests to staff. Insures completed assignments meet departmental standards and that documentation is complete. Insures user training information is available and accessible; provides user training as needed.
Maintains a general working knowledge of all SPEC applications and in-house enhancements; acts as primary technical contact with software vendor in person and through the Internet. Installs, maintains and evaluates new releases of application software; executes performance testing and tuning as required.
Maintains integrity of computer systems with respect to SPEC computer needs. Installs, maintains and evaluates new releases of operating systems, compilers, utilities and communications programs. Reviews and evaluates the performance of the system hardware and system software; recommends and implements changes for performance improvement; designs and implements various computer security programs to insure data and system integrity, in accordance with policy.
Participates in the SPEC computing planning process. Works with departments Cooperative wide to identify areas where the computer system could aid in or enhance productivity and efficiency.
Assists in communications with the hardware vendor regarding systems maintenance and performance and with the software vendor regarding SPEC automated systems maintenance and performance; prepares and submits vendor warranty claims, parts, and documentation associated with warranty repairs (with authorization from vendors).
Assists in maintenance and operation of the computer mapping, drafting, GPS, and SCADA type systems to ensure that all information is maintained and updated to provide current, accurate, and readily accessible information to all users and service providers.
Assists in maintenance and operation of automated metering infrastructure system (AMI) to ensure that equipment is maintained properly, and operating at peak efficiency to provide accurate and timely data regarding customer usage.
Implements systems of continuous quality and process improvement, regularly identifying opportunities for implementing actions and processes to improve quality and performance of San Patricio Electric Cooperative IT and computer services areas of responsibility.
Promotes electric use by taking every opportunity to acquaint the consumers with the productive uses of electricity; obtaining increased member and public understanding of the Cooperative’s objectives, plans and programs, and of rural electrification in general.
Provides customer service as needed and appropriate, manages assigned key customer accounts through regular direct contact to ensure customer satisfaction and on-going communication.
OTHER INFORMATION: The Information Technology Coordinator is responsible for maintenance and operation of the information technology and computer services of the cooperative and contributes to the cooperative’s mission of distributing efficient and effective services to customers over 4,000 miles of distribution lines, composing 10,000 square miles of service area. Within the parameters dictated by policy, legal principles and regulatory requirements, this position has limited autonomy and latitude to identify and solve problems and make decisions necessary to maintain the operation of the Cooperative’s computer network and other IT systems dependent on training, experience, and certification.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Position requires an AA/AS degree in computer related field plus two years relevant experience; a BA/BS degree in computer science or related discipline; or the combination of education and experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.
Extensive experience with personal computers and software applications, including Microsoft Office Products and Operating Systems, and other programs in use by SPEC.
Documentation of education, experience and licensure is required and must be maintained; incumbent must be insurable under the policies and requirements of SPEC.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Requires special technical knowledge of the techniques and procedures of software and network support for multiple users. Must understand installation, configuration and troubleshooting processes for software, hardware, networking and accessory equipment. Requires experience with personal computer equipment. Must have advanced personal computer word processing, spreadsheet, database and Microsoft Windows skills. Terminal emulation, Window Server, and network installation and maintenance skills required. Requires sufficient analytical skills to assess problems or unusual situations and develop solutions. Prefer a working understanding of the Cooperative and individual department operations, goals and objectives relating to computer & IT services. Prefer knowledge of how to assemble and disassemble personal computer components, including cabling. Prefer network certification.
Requires the ability to independently perform all of the duties of the position efficiently and effectively. Must be able to install, configure, troubleshoot and maintain all of the software applications and peripheral equipment used. Must have strong communication and training skills and be able to communicate technical information to non-technical users. Additional knowledge and skills important to this position include but are not limited to:
Strong working knowledge of computer system applications including but not limited to accounting systems, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and electronic communication software applications. Windows Server, SQL and Microsoft Exchange experience a plus.
Interpersonal relations and customer service/relations skills; facilitating interdepartmental, inter-Cooperative, community, and board operations.
Oral and written communications skills, including effective communications in person and on the telephone.
Knowledge of the applicable administrative standards, rules and regulations that control the operations of San Patricio Electric Cooperative
Good organizational and self-management skills, including time management, document handling and management, etc.
Performs the essential functions and elements of this position competently, following a training and orientation period not to exceed six (6) months.
