U.S. Steel has an immediate opening for a Server Systems Administrator at our primary data center located on the South Side of Pittsburgh, PA. The Server Systems Administrator will primarily provide Red Hat Enterprise Linux server support including installation, patching, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The person will be a part of a two-person team primarily responsible for ~250 RHEL Servers. Also, the individual will be the secondary technical resource for NetApp, and AIX servers. The individual will apply communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills to help identify and resolve server issues to maximize the benefit of IT server investments. Also, the individual will exhibit a strong work ethic and customer service focus. The position reports to the primary Linux Server Administrator and the department manager as part of the U. S. Steel IT organization.
Technical: •Ensure the reliability and availability of Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers. •Deploy new RHEL servers both physical, virtual (on VMware), and in the cloud. •Work closely with application and database software administrators for software installs, maintenance, troubleshooting and performance management. •Shell scripting (Bash, Korn, Perl) to automate system administration tasks. •Regular patching of servers, including some evenings and weekends. •Assist with the administration of NetApp storage and AIX servers. •Participate in an on-call rotation for off hours support.
Strategy & Planning: •Preparing and delivering reports, recommendations, or alternatives that address existing and potential trouble areas in operating systems across the organization, and assisting in implementation. •Meeting with decision makers, systems owners, and end users to define business requirements and server goals, and identify and resolve server issues. •Ensuring compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems. •Planning, implementing and maintaining Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery solutions including standard backups and site recovery.
MINIMUM EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: •Bachelor’s Degree in computer science or related field, and/or 4 years equivalent work experience. •Two years of experience administering Linux/UNIX operating systems. •Server and storage management, support and troubleshooting in an Enterprise environment. •Strong oral and written communications skills; able to articulate ideas and listen effectively. •Candidate must be a self-starter demonstrating time management & organizational skills including the ability to multi-task and effectively prioritize multiple, concurrent work activities.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: •Experience implementing and maintaining Red Hat Linux Servers, NetApp storage, AIX solutions. •Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7. •Linux command line support and troubleshooting. •Experience with provisioning and configuration tools (Foreman, Katello, Ansible). •Experience with server hardening and cyber security standards compliance. •Experience with Azure and AWS. •Certifications are a plus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: •Working hours; a minimum of 5 day / 40 hours per week. However, 24/7 off-hours support including weekends and evenings is expected. One to two days a week can be done from home after the individual is competent with the work load, probably after the first three months. •The Server Systems Administrator is a member of a local eight-person team responsible for supporting the U. S. Steel IT Headquarters’ Server Infrastructure including ~1,200 Intel servers (mainly virtual, comprised of Windows and Linux), UNIX (AIX Power Servers), storage solutions (Hitachi, NetApp, IBM), and backup solutions (IBM TSM and Dell/EMS Data Domain).
