The University of Pittsburgh's University Library System (ULS) is seeking a UNIX System Administrator to ensure the continuity of service for the ULS library systems and electronic publishing services. This is a high-level, regular, full-time position responsible for effective provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware, software, and related infrastructure.
Duties include administration, operations support, and maintenance of ULS systems. The incumbent is responsible for the complex analysis, evaluation, design, implementation, and maintenance of several major ULS systems. The incumbent will be responsible for communication with staff, faculty, and students through working groups and committees and may collaborate on software development projects. The incumbent will work with and assist in the processes related to data import/export to/from various systems and provide migration paths for data.
The incumbent is required to be familiar with the Solaris and Linux (Oracle Enterprise Linux or Red Hat equivalent) operating systems. The incumbent is required to be proficient in the administration of UNIX-based systems and be able to manage all aspects of the UNIX operating system, including operating system installation, software installation, patching, and manipulating hardware that is attached to the system, as well as have experience in virtual environments such as VMware or VirtualBox. The incumbent must be familiar with the installation of a LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl) on various UNIX operating systems and how to perform basic administration of the LAMP stack. Knowledge of Storage Area Networks (SANs) and networking is considered a significant plus.
The incumbent is required to have a minimum of five (5) years of experience administrating UNIX systems in a large organization. Certification in Solaris or Linux administration is a plus.
The incumbent is required to possess a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science (preferred), Information Science, or other related areas.
The incumbent must have the ability to provide exceptional customer service, quickly learn new concepts, manage tasks efficiently while meeting deadlines, and possess excellent communication skills. He/she must be a self-motivated, independent, detail-oriented and responsible team-player. This position reports to the Head of Information Technology in the University Library System.
Work assignments originate from the Solutions Architect (S/P IV) and from the Head of Information Technology (Admin IV). Work will consist of administering and managing roughly 70 separate server systems on several main platforms, providing maintenance and applying patches, and in some cases, migrating systems to newer hardware or converting systems to use virtual instances. In addition, the position will be responsible for standing up new systems and resolving problems in the existing infrastructure.
Deadlines must be met and are most important when tasks relating the Office of Scholarly Communication and Publishing are involved, as the majority of the work involved impacts external customers (worldwide). Delays may impact the ability to recoup costs.

B.S. in Computer or Information Science or related field; Master's degree in Computer or Information Science preferred. Proficiency with UNIX Administration. Proficiency with Solaris, Red Hat (Oracle Enterprise Linux preferred). Proficiency with UNIX Shell Scripting. Proficiency with the installation and administration of the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl). Knowledge of virtual machine environments (e.g. VirtualBox, VMware). Knowledge of Storage Area Networks and Midrange Storage Systems is a plus. A minimum of 5 years' experience in UNIX system administration in a complex production environment. Certification in Solaris or Linux administration is a plus.
